One of the first decisions when you study in Malaysia is when to start. Unlike some countries, Malaysia has several intakes through the year, which gives you flexibility. This guide explains the main ones and how to choose.
The main intakes
| Intake | Typical timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| January / February | Start of the year | Common for bachelor's and diploma programmes. |
| May | Mid-year | Offered by many universities, and useful if your results come later in the year. |
| September / October | Second half of the year | The main intake for many universities, including public universities. |
Some universities also offer extra intakes during the year, and certain courses start only once a year. Always check the intake listed for the exact course you want.
How to choose the right intake
- Your results. Apply when you have your HSC or degree result ready, because most offers and discounts are based on it.
- Your English proof. If you need IELTS, allow time to take the test. See IELTS requirements for Malaysian universities.
- Your visa timeline. The EMGS Visa Approval Letter usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, and some universities suggest applying about eight weeks before registration. Our guide to the Malaysia student visa explains the steps.
- Your budget. A later intake gives you more time to prepare your tuition and living costs. See the monthly numbers in our Kuala Lumpur cost of living guide.
- Scholarship availability. Discounts and places can be limited for each intake, so apply early. See the current offers on our scholarship and tuition discount page.
When to start applying
Work backwards from the intake you want:
- About 3 to 4 months before: choose your course and university and prepare your documents.
- About 2 to 3 months before: submit your application. The offer letter usually takes 7 to 14 working days.
- About 8 weeks before registration: submit your EMGS visa application.
- Before travelling: wait until your Visa Approval Letter is issued, then book your flight.
What if you miss an intake?
You do not lose a year. Many universities have another intake within a few months, and you can use the time to improve your English, prepare your documents or compare courses on our fees page. A counsellor can tell you which intake still has places for your course.

Intake months differ by university and course. Confirm the dates with the university before you plan your travel.
