Getting your student visa is one of the most important steps when you study in Malaysia. The process looks complicated at first, but it follows the same order every time. This guide explains it step by step for students applying from Bangladesh.
What is EMGS and what is the VAL?
EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) is the agency that handles student visa applications for Malaysian universities. The Visa Approval Letter (VAL) is the document issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department that confirms you are approved to enter Malaysia as a student for your programme.
The process, step by step
- Get your offer letter. Apply to your university and receive an offer. This usually takes about 7 to 14 working days.
- Submit your documents. Your application goes to EMGS online. Typical documents are your passport data page, academic certificates and transcripts, a photo, the offer letter and a health declaration. Your university may ask for more.
- Wait for the VAL. EMGS checks the file and Immigration decides. This usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. Some universities advise applying about eight weeks before registration to be safe.
- Get a single-entry visa if required. Depending on your nationality, you may need a single-entry visa from the Malaysian High Commission, using your VAL.
- Travel to Malaysia. Fly only after your VAL has been issued.
- Complete the Student Pass. After you arrive, you complete the medical screening and your passport is endorsed with the Student Pass, after which you receive your student identity card.
Documents to prepare early
- A passport that stays valid for long enough. Some universities ask for at least 18 months of validity.
- SSC and HSC (or equivalent) certificates and transcripts, and your degree documents if you are applying for a Master's or PhD.
- Passport-size photos with the required background.
- Your offer letter and any English-language proof. See our guide to IELTS requirements for Malaysian universities.
How much does it cost?
The EMGS visa fee usually falls between RM 2,000 and RM 3,000 depending on the university, and it normally includes medical insurance and the Student Pass. Your university will confirm the exact amount in your offer. For the rest of your budget, see our guide to the cost of living in Kuala Lumpur.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Travelling before the VAL is issued. Do not enter Malaysia before your VAL is approved. Doing so can cancel your visa application.
- Entering on a tourist visa. A tourist visa cannot be converted into a student visa.
- Unclear scans or missing pages. Upload clear, complete copies the first time. Re-uploads cost days.
- Applying too late. Start early, so the VAL arrives before your registration date.
Where to find official information
The official EMGS portal is visa.educationmalaysia.gov.my. Procedures and timelines can change, so always confirm the latest requirements with your university's international office.
